  • An ingrowing toenail is when the edge of a nail grows into the skin of the toe. Once the edge of the nail breaks through the skin, it produces inflammation. Initially this can cause a minor discomfort, but it can progress into an infection in the adjacent skin or become a reoccurring problem. Ingrown toenails most commonly affect the large (great) toes.

Sweating

Sweating is a normal process that occurs to regulate body temperature. However for some it can be excessive, uncontrollable and greatly affect quality of life.

Excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis is due to over stimulation of the sympathetic nervous sytem that control the sweat glands. It commonly affects the palms of the hands, soles of the feet or armpits (axilla).

The exact cause has not yet been identified. Some feel anxiety is a trigger however suffers often report sweating at times they do not feel anxious. The issue with anxiety however is that the anxiety of sweating can cause increased sweating, which can then produce a vicous cycle of further anxiety and further sweating.

The sweating is not only a source of discomfort and embarrassment for the sufferer, but can effect both social and work related environments causing avoidance of simple everyday activities such as shaking hands.

The problem usually develops in adolescence and there can be a genetic link.

Types of hyperhidrosis:

Sweaty Hands or Palmar Hyperhidrosis
This occurs when there is constant or excessive sweating of the palms causing wet or slippery hands that can interfere with writing and gripping or impede sporting activities.

Sweaty Feet or Plantar Hyperhidrosis
This involves constant or excessive sweating of the feet.  It can lead to constant sock changing, fear of foot odour or even the need to avoid wearing sandals and thongs because feet are too slippery.

Sweaty Armpits or Axillary Hyperhidrosis
This involves constant or excessive sweating of the underarms.  It can cause constant wet patches on clothing, resulting in social avoidance, frequent changing of clothes or increased showering throughout the day to avoid body odour and embarrassment.

At Medical Skin Clinic Austrlia we can help treat hyperhidrosis with botulinum toxin injections.
Injections of botulium toxin are placed into the area of increased sweating resulting in a reduction or complete ceaseation of sweating from the area treated.

How does Botulium toxin work?
Botulium toxin is the protein used in anti wrinkle injections. The toxin blocks the release of a transmitter called achetylcholine from nerve ending where it should then acts on another nerve cell or a muscle to cause an action such as a muscle contraction. If acetylcholine is not released, it cannot stimulate the sweat glands nerve cells to secrete sweat. This results in no sweating at that site.

How quickly does the treatment take effect and how long does it lasts?
The results obtained vary according to the treatment given and the patients response. It can take up to 2 weeks for the injections to reach their full effect. Within this 2 weeks period, the onset of dryness varies from person to person, with some seeing differences within 48 hours and others up to one week later. It is always better to consider it will take 2 weeks to start working and plan for this.

Once the treatment has reached its full effect, it is expected that you will be sweat free for five to six months.

Hovever experience at the clinic has been that these effects can last longer, and for some the sweating has not returned. This again cannot be promised. We feel this is due to the fact that having not sweated for 5-6 months the anxiety related to the problem resolves, which then keeps the problem at bay.

Posible side effects
At Medial Skin Clinic Australia the procedure and its risks and benefits will be fully explained to you as an individual so you can make an informed decision. We will also provide supportive follow up.

There are no significant side effects to the procedure. The procedure involves the insertion of numberous injections into the area of concern. For some this can produce mild discomfort but it is tolerable.
