Ingrowing Toe Nails

An ingrowing toenail is when the edge of a nail grows into the skin of the toe. Once the edge of the nail breaks through the skin, it produces inflammation. Initially this can cause a minor discomfort, but it can progress into an infection in the adjacent skin or become a reoccurring problem. Ingrown toenails most commonly affect the large (great) toes.

Symptoms and Signs
An ingrowing toenail can cause redness, pain, and swelling around the toe nail and surrounding skin. There may be a clear yellowish discharge or pus if it becomes infected. Occasionally, ingrowning toenails resolve without treatment. Painful, persistent, and recurring ingrowning toenails should be reviewed by a Doctor.

Causes
Ingrowning toenails can be caused by improper trimming of the toenail, genetics, improper shoe fitting, injuries or nail picking.

Treatment

Wedge Resection for ingrowing toe nails
At Medical Skin Clinic Australia we usually carry out a procedure called a wedge resection to treat ingrowing toe nails. This is a minor surgical procedure that is done under a local anesthetic.

Advantages of the Treatment
The recurrent infection and pain may be completely cured.

What to Expect After the Procedure
The toe will be sore, swollen and a bit oozy for a couple of days, during which you may require simple pain relief. During this time you may also find it painful to walk and need to wear open shoes.

The clinic will review you again a few days after the procedure.

A week of rest is required, and you may need to avoid sports for 2-3 weeks.

The toenail will look narrower than that before after the procedure.
