Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) are therapies that use specific wave lengths of light to target specific skin conditions or structures without damage to surrounding structures.
At Medical Skin Clinic Australia our highly trained medical proffesionals are able to identify the cause of your concern and tailor a treatment that uses the correct wavelength of light to target your concern without any unwanted complications.
The difference between laser and IPL is that laser utilises one specific wavelength of light to target a specific depth or colour within the skin, whereas IPL emits a broad spectrum of different light wavelengths in a pulsed manner to reach several layers of the skin simultaneously.
Each wavelength of light is able to penetrate to a certain depth within the skin or target a specific colour or pigment within the skin for example brown discolouration or a blood vessel. For this reason correct identification of the problem and knowledge of the level of skin this occurs in is essential for selecting the best laser or IPL to correct the problem and ensure there are no side effects.
Laser and IPL causes its affects in a number of ways. They can:
Producing targeted thermal (heat) damage to unwanted pigmentation or vessels.
Cause microwounds that induce growth factors and skin repair .
Induce new collagen production within the skin to result in remodeling, repair and overall skin rejuventation and increased thickness.
Conditions that can be treated by Laser or IPL

How a Treatment is done:
The specific treatment will depend on the area and concern being treated. All treatments will be discussed with you to ensure you are happy to go ahead and all questions have been answered.
As a guide the following will occur:
1. The area treated will be cooled and your eyes will be protected with some goggles.
2. A clear ultrasound gel is then applied to the skin to protect its surface and help guide the light.
3. The treatment will commence. You may hear some clicking and some feel a flick sensation. You may have some minimal discomfort but the procedure will not be painful.
Most treatments last about 30 minutes.
After the procedure:
Depending on the procedure carried out, the after affects will vary from nothing, to some pinkness and inflammation or to significant redness and downtime.
All post treatment effects will be discussed with you to ensure you are prepared and understand the after effects. Most treatments have minimal or no downtime and can be done without any distruption to your lifestyle.
If pigmentation or vessels are being treated they may initially become darker before they resolve – this is normal. Resolution may be instant or take 2-4 weeks.
How may treatments?
Results and number of sessions required will depend on the type and extent of initial concern and other lifestyle factors such as smoking, diet and sun exposure.
As a guide, most conditions require 3-5 treatments every 3-4 weeks but some only require the one session.
At Medical Skin Clinic Australia we always discuss your individual concern with you and your expected results so you are aware of likely treatment outcomes and sessions required. Plans are also flexible so if you do not like a treatment or would like a change, this can easily be done. We want to work with your skin for its longevity.
