Injectable Dermal Fillers
Injectible fillers or dermal fillers are products that are injected under to skin for a number of different reasons. They come in a variety of thickenesses and are most commonly used to change the facial profile to a more youthful one. The injection of fillers under the skin can fill in most deep folds or wrinkles, create fuller lips or pad out hollowing cheeks or eyes.
They can also be used to enhance or change facial features such as the chin, jaw line, nose or cheeks or placed to rejunvenate areas such as the hands and decolletage or used to improve any skin texture and volume or help improve the appearance of scarring.
Fillers can have great results alone or in conjunction with anti wrinkle injections, lasers, dermal needling or skin peels. Results can be maintained with an active home skin care regime.
At Medical Skin Clinic Australia we offer complimentary no obligation consultations to allow you to express your individual concerns and ask questions, so you fully understand the treatments, its results and its maintenance.
As with all our treatments at the clinic we aim to give you a natural look so that you look and feel refreshed whilst maintaining your individuality.
What can Dermal Fillers treat?
Generally dermal fillers fill facial areas that are lacking volume or need support due to ageing or skin damage or personal preference. Their aim is to replace lost collagen and elastin that normally gives skin its youthful appearance.
Treatments are performed to produce a natural look that aims to rejuventate your own individual features. It is actually hard to produce the enlarged, frozen or plumped features seen on celebrities.
The commonest use of dermal filler are:
- Any facial line or fold.
- Hollowness around the eyes.
- Hollowness around the temples.
- Loss of volume, lines or flattening in the cheeks.
- The fold running between the nose and mouth (Nasolabial fold).
- Lines above the upper lip.
- To improve or excentuate lip volume and shape, prevent lip stick bleed.
- To reduce the line running from the corners of the lip to the jaw line (Marionette lines).
- Improve facial features such as the nose, lips, jawline, cheeks.
- Improve fine lines on the decolletage.
- Hand Rejuvenation.
- Improve the appearance of scars from acne or injuries.
Your treatment with us
At Medical Skin Clinic Australia, we aim to medically assess your skin and listen to your concerns and put together a plan that you fully understand and are happy with.
Our dermal fillers are made from a non animal based purified sugar called hyaluronic acid. This sugar is found naturally in our skin giving it volume, hydration and nutrition. The Hyaluronic acid injected is recognised by and broken down by the skins natural metabolism. This reduces the risk of any adverse outcomes.
As we age are skin looses hydration, elasticity and collagen. Dermal fillers aim to replace the lost hyaluronic acid, resulting in a return of hydration and volume. Recent studies are concluding that these fillers are aiding long lasting rejuventation due to the stimulation of new collagen leaving the skin with more volume once the filler has been fully degraded than the area had before the filler was injected.
Planning a Treatment
At Medical skin Clinic Australia we always see you for a complimenatry consultation before any treatment to ensure you are fully prepared and all your questions have been answered.
It is possible to get some brusing with dermal fillers and although we aim to produce no brusing it can occur. For this reason we highly recommend you always air on the side of caution and avoid planning any important work or social events for 7-10 days after treatment. If you bruise easily, you may need to plan for 2 weeks for the brusing to subside. Most bruises can be covered fairly well with a good mineral make-up, but not all. If you have an extremely important event like a wedding or a reunion, we would recommend having fillers done 3-4 weeks before the big day.
What happens during a treatment?
Treatment procedures vary depending on the area is being treated. All procedures will be discussed with you before they commence. Most injections have a local anesthetic within them, so once the area being treated has been prepared, injections are expertly inserted with a very fine needle without the need for any numbing cream. For other areas a numbing cream, ice or local anesthetic may be used to help minimize any discomfort.
Genarally procedures take 30 minutes and are very well tolerated.
When can the results be seen?
Results are seen immediately but the end result can take 2-4 weeks to peak.
Initially you may also have some swelling and brusing that could make the area look over filled and puffy, this will subside over 1-2 days.
If you had some deep lines these may also still be visable, again do not worry, this will improve with time as the filler provides a constant support preventing the line from creasing and the filler draws water to the area increasing the lines hydration all helping it to fine out.
Generally, it takes 2 weeks to see the results of the treatment which is when we will arrange a follow up with you. Your expectations will be discussed with you before the treatment is arranged during your complimentary initial consultation.
How long do fillers last?
Dermal filler are not permanent but they are gradually dissolved by the bodys natural metabolism. There is no sudden loss in the product and in fact even when the filler has totally gone from the area the area is usually plumper that it was before treatment. The fact it is a temporary solution is a great feature. It means as your face changes with time, filler can be used in a changing way too. For example a permanent implant in your face now may not suit your facial features in 10-30 years time.
There are a number of different dermal filler used. Each is chosen dependent on the area being treated, the severirty of the problem being treated, your age, skin quality and desired look.
Generally the thicker the filler, the longer it lasts. It also lasts longer in areas where it is not subjected to muscle contractions. Often having anti wrinkle injections with dermal fillers can be synergistic, each helping both modilities to last longer.
As a rule of thumb Hyaluronic acid fillers usually last for six to 18 months.
What are the possible side effects?
The commonest side effects of fillers are discomfort, bruising and swelling.
Less common are infection, and allergic reaction.
In the hands of skilled proffessionals such as those at the Medical Skin Clinic Australia, dermal fillers are generally very safe. Every cosmetic procedure however involves a certain amount of risk. All risks and side effects are discussed with you before the procedure to ensure you fully understand any risks and make an informed decision. We also provide follow up and support to minimise problems.
