Dermal Needling

Skin or Dermal Needling

Skin needling is a new revolutionary cosmetic technique that promotes your skin’s natural production of elastin and collagen, reducing wrinkles, treating imperfections or scars and smoothing your skin with your body’s own energy.

At Medical Skin Clinic Australia we use a Dermapen for skin needling. This can be used on any part of the body and is a great procedure for a number of different problems with minimal down time.

Skin needling is a procedure that involves puncturing the skin multiple times with small needles to induce skin repair and collagen growth.

The needles cause thousands of micro-injuries to the skin. This induces the skin to begin a process of wound healing that is followed by the production of new collagen. The production of new collagen continues for up to 12 months after the procedure.

There are several disorders that can be treated with Dermapen including but not limited to:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Aged skin / Photo ageing
  • Scarring eg Acne scarring, keloid scars, post surgical scars
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Enlarged pores
  • General Skin rejuvenation
  • Stretch Marks

Is there any discomfort?
The procedure has minimal discomfort. Prior to treatment a topical anesthetic is applied for 20-30 minutes. Skin Needling with DermaPen is a quick treatment, therefore if minor discomfort is experienced (prickling sensation), it is for a minimal time frame.

To aid your comfort the face or other area being treated is worked on section-by-section in a systematic manner. We also talk you through the process, so we know how you are feeling and can see the skin’s reaction.

What is the reaction after a Dermapen treatment?
After the treatment your face may be red and feel hot. This can be eased with cold compresses or applying a post treatment moisturiser that has been kept in the fridge.

Over the first 12-48 hours it is expected that you will experience some redness and mild swelling, much like the appearance and sensation of sunburn. You may also have some very tiny pin point bruises. It is usually easily covered with a mineral make up and normal activities continued. If scarring is being treated, heightened redness and localised superficial bruising may occur.

From day 3-5 the skin may have some superficial flaking, again not dissimilar to after a sun burn. A hydrating moisturizer or balm is recommended to aid the natural shedding and lessen the dry skin sensation that may be felt.

How many treatments are needed for skin needling using Dermapen?
A treatment is usually a course of 4-10 sessions. Results and number of sessions required will depend on the extent of initial concern and other lifestyle factors such as smoking, diet and sun exposure. Treatments are normally spaced 4-6 weeks apart, depending on the condition being treated and the patient’s healing ability.

At Medical Skin Clinic Australia we always discuss your individual concern with you and your expected results so you are aware of likely treatment outcomes and sessions required. Plans are also flexible so if you do not like a treatment or would like a change this can easily be done. We want to work with your skin for its longevity.
